Edward Anthony was trained to be a civil engineer when he became interested in photography.  After completing studies with Samuel F. B. Morse, he traveled photographing the west and eventually settled in New  York.  In addition to taking photographs, he began to sell supplies and invented cameras and other photographic equipment.
